NFS winners at Royal Television Society annual Student Television Awards
16 February 2017 – The Royal Television Society (RTS) ROI Centre held its annual Student Television Awards in Studio One at the RTÉ Television Centre in Donnybrook, Dublin on Wednesday 15th February 2017.
The Awards, which recognise the best in student television, were presented by Dee Forbes, RTÉ Director General, in five categories: Animation, Short Feature, Factual, Comedy & Entertainment and Drama.
The award in the Short Feature Category went to Jordan Murshed from National Film School, IADT, Dun Laoghaire for ‘Vitruvius’. The jury highlighted the film’s strong opening graphics, effective score and sound effects. They said the background set of the famous drawing of Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci worked well and the gentle surprise ending made this an unusual creative piece.
The award in the Factual Category also went to National Film School, IADT, Dun Laoghaire students. Laura Gaynor and Luke Brabazon took home the award for ‘When the Butcher Stopped Ordering Meat’. The jury agreed that the self-deprecating sense of humour of central figure, Michael Quirke, came over very well. They felt good planning was evident, with significant opening and closing sequences, cutaway shots and that the warm congenial atmosphere was maintained throughout.
Commenting on this year’s award entries, Charles Byrne, Chairman of the RTS Republic of Ireland Centre, said “The ROI Jury was delighted to have such a high number of entries again this year in the five categories. They were very impressed with the standard of the work of the Students and they wish the nominees well in the National Awards in London in June.”
