IADT + 1916 – An Industrial School Resident in 1916 – From 25 April 2016
At the time of the 1911 census of Ireland there were 158 pupils at the Carriglea Park Industrial School for boys (now part of the campus of IADT) in Kingstown (Dún Laoghaire) in south county Dublin. The life story of one such boy is explored, from his birth in the Liberties of Dublin in 1898 to his death in Suffolk 88 years later. This exploration is undertaken by the creation of a series of short video pieces and mixed-media art objects based on documentary sources. Experimental animation is used to create new-media pieces in response to the controlled social and conditions of the time.
The regimented nature of the school is compared to that of the Sherwood Foresters who encamped in the school grounds en route to their engagement with the rebel forces in Easter Week 1916.
The opportunity is used not only to examine the history of the school from the perspective of the pupils using documentary evidence but also to look at the wider community of Kingstown – often perceived as the most loyal of Boroughs – and of the wider world.
‘George’s Story’ — An Industrial School Resident in the 1900s
George was a resident of the Carriglea Industrial School from 1907 to 1915. As a member of the School band, he had a unique view on the comings and goings of members of royalty and politicians through Kingstown Harbour.
The connection of the Sherwood Foresters in 1916 with the IADT campus will also be examined during this event.

Ag tráth Dhaonáireamh 1911 ar Éirinn, bhí 158 dalta ag Scoil Saothair Pháirc na Carraige Léithe do bhuachaillí (atá anois mar chuid de champas Institiúid Ealaíne, Deartha agus Teicneolaíochta Dhún Laoghaire) i nDún Laoghaire i mBaile Átha Cliath Theas. Fiosraítear scéal beatha duine de na buachaillí siúd, ó rugadh é sna Saoirsí i mBaile Átha Cliath in 1898 go dtí go bhfuair sé bás inSuffolk88 bliain ina dhiaidh sin. Tugtar faoin bhfiosrú seo trí shraith píosaí gearra físeáin agus earraí ealaín mheasctha na meán bunaithe ar fhoinsí clár faisnéise. Úsáidtear beochan thurgnamhach chun píosaí na meán nua a chruthú mar fhreagairt ar choinníollacha rialaithe agus sóisialta an trátha sin.
Cuirtear cineál rialaithe na scoile i gcomparáid le cineál rialaithe na Sherwood Foresters a champáil ar thailte na scoile agus iad ar a mbealach chun tabhairt faoi fhórsaí na reibiliúnaithe Seachtain na Cásca 1916.
Tapaítear an deis, ní hamháin chun scrúdú a dhéanamh ar stair na scoile ó pheirspictíocht na ndaltaí agus leas á bhaint as fianaise dhoiciméadach, ach freisin, chun súil a chaitheamh ar an bpobal níos fairsinge i nDún Laoghaire – a meastar go raibh an pobal sin ar cheann de na buirgí ba dhílse – agus ó pheirspictíocht an domhain níos fairsinge.
