Costume Designer
In the Career Features series we review potential career paths IADT graduates pursue. Lets take a close look at what it takes to become a costume designer.
As a costume designer, you are concerned with character and characterisation. Whether for stage (theatre, dance, or opera) or screen (film and television), the designer works initially with the director and creative team to establish the visual style of the costumes. Costume designers work as part of a team, which can include a costume supervisor, makers and tailors and wardrobe assistants who work backstage or stand by on set. The work may involve the re-creation of an historical character and period, or the invention of a completely imagined world. Costume designers work closely with actors to create exactly the right visual effect.
