What is Broadcast Production for Radio and Television?
This production-centred programme will be of particular interest to graduates
who wish to deepen their knowledge of media and communications by acquiring practical skills and experience in radio and television broadcasting. It equips students with the essential production practices to pursue a career in radio and television production.
The MA will also interest those who want specialist skills in areas such as programme research, and production funding for broadcast or online media.
On completion of this programme, you will have acquired:
- creative and technical production skills specific to radio and television broadcasting
- a portfolio of production projects (such as news, current affairs, magazine and chat shows)
- a knowledge of professional production roles specific to radio and television
- an expanded network of professional contacts in radio and television
- an understanding of new production contexts (including online and interactive media)
- a range of transferable skills in areas such as project management and teamwork.
Aims and Objectives
What will I be able to do when I graduate?
Production opportunities may exist in the radio and television industry,
as well as further afield in online and interactive media.
What subjects will I study?
Production Funding, Radio and Television Programme Genres, Creative
Thinking and Production Research, Broadcast Projects and Media in Context.
You will undertake an industry placement during the summer months (minimum
of 2 weeks) and complete a Major Project in the area of Radio or Television production.
What are the Entry Requirements?
- Portfolio submission, as part of the application
- Undergraduate qualification of 2nd Class Honours
or higher at Honours Degree Level. - In exceptional cases, applicants will be considered provided they can demonstrate Honours Degree equivalence which can be verified through APEL (Accreditation
of Prior Experiential Learning) process.
Applications, including the portfolio, are screened and shortlisted. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview.
What should my Portfolio include?
Scripts, storyboards, audio or video recordings demonstrating an interest in,
and aptitude for, radio and/or television production.
Course Equipment Requirements:
Successful applicants on this course are advised that they should have an industry standard 24 bit linear recorder for radio location recordings. Recommended brands are any of the following recorders: Tascam DR07; Zoom H2; Edirol R-09HR
In addition all students should have an external portable hard-drive with 150GB or more for digital tape video editing and that it is recommended that students have a laptop computer.
