About MA/MSc in Digital Media

What is Digital Media?

Digital media involves a range of communications such as still images, printed text, videos, sound and animation that can be brought together and distributed in digital format. This programme connects creativity, technology and business with collaborative work at the centre of the production process.

This is an exciting initiative in digital media education. This Masters provides a cohesive interdisciplinary programme that examines the convergence of digital media content with technology in a business context.

The programme has been designed for professionals who want to continue to work and develop their digital media skills. Prospective students may come from a range of backgrounds associated with the media, business or technology. Groups will work together to develop innovative ideas for prototype productions for a range of professional sectors and contexts such as web content broadcast and mobile communications.

The programme has been developed in association with the Digital Media Forum and has excellent links with a range of professional digital media companies in Ireland and the newly established IADT Media Cube, Digital Media Incubation Centre, which together will support students’ understanding of the industry.

Year 1 of this programme is a Postgraduate Diploma, followed in year 2 by the Masters degree. The Masters designation, either an MA or an MSc, is decided at the outset; while students collaborate on common project work they are assessed according to MA or MSc criteria.

Aims and Objectives

What will I be able to do when I graduate?

A Masters degree is widely recognised as the entry level standard for research based PhD programmes. Graduates should have become proficient in a number
of aspects of digital media production, technology for digital media and entrepreneurship. Collaborative working skills are widely valued and there are opportunities to link with further digital media support such as the IADT Create programme for media entrepreneurs.

What subjects will I study?

The Postgraduate Diploma provides an insight into contemporary digital media concepts and academic research methodologies. The central focus of the programme is practical project work which integrates theory with practice and entrepreneurial, technical and creative skills to create high-quality digital media.

On the Masters programme, you will develop a self-directed project prototype or thesis which will enable you to demonstrate masters level skills in a chosen area of interest. The programme of study will lead to either an MA or MSc award according to the agreed learning outcomes.

What are the Entry Requirements?

  • Undergraduate qualification of 2nd Class Honours first class (2.1) or higher at Honours Degree level in a cognate discipline
  • Applicants will be considered provided they can demonstrate Honours Degree equivalence which can be verified through APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) process
