About BA (Honours) in Film and Television Production
What is Film and Television Production?
Creativity, experimentation, innovation and an enquiring mind are all vital if you are to excel in this sector of the entertainment industry. Having an in-depth knowledge of the basic concepts that underpin this specialist field is equally important.
Our programme provides a stimulating education in all aspects of film and television production. It educates, trains and develops students to become professional practitioners in cinema, film, television and video. Your understanding of subjects like Production, Camera/Lighting, and Sound and Editing will ensure that you meet and inform the demands of contemporary media practice.
Aims and Objectives
What will I be able to do when I graduate?
Careers exist within the film and television industries, such as production management, direction, assistant direction, location management, studio sound recording, editing, post production sound, film/video/studio camera, lighting and script writing.
You could also pursue further studies at postgraduate level, including
the MA in Screenwriting (DL051) at IADT.
What subjects will I study?
Cinema and Television History, Critical Thinking, Craft areas, Script, Production, Direction, Camera/Lighting, Sound and Editing, Single and Multi camera production techniques, Industry Focus.
What are the Entry Requirements?
- Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent) with a minimum of Grade C3 in
two Higher (or Common) Level papers, together with Grade D3 in four other subjects,
to include English. Foundation level Maths (D3) is acceptable - A portfolio of relevant work
- You may be called for interview if further clarification on your portfolio is required
- Applicants with FETAC awards require distinctions in 3 (of 8) modules. FETAC

What should my Portfolio include?
A portfolio is a sample collection of your best work, well presented. So be selective and highlight your best work. It is not necessary to include all of the items listed below.
- Film/Video work - to be presented on DVD (PAL) only. At least 4 minutes of your footage will be screened by the panel. Quality is more important than quantity.
Let us know your role(s) on the production - Photography – include a selection of your best work in black & white and/or colour and supply all images on print (if work is digital, then print in high-quality mode)
- Written Work – screenplays (correct format), short stories, plays, poetry are all acceptable. For screenplays and short stories, synopsise the story on a cover
sheet and indicate what section you would like us to read - Audio Work (on Audio CD only) – radio plays, music you have composed and interesting soundscapes
- Drawing or Concept work – drawings and paintings that indicate that you have
a good eye and imagination. Also, storyboards, costume and production design sketches - Notebooks/creative sketchbooks or diary indicating your interest in the discipline
- Include a general CV with details of hobbies, technical skills and involvement
in team / film related activities.
Are there any costs for materials and/or field trips?
Approx. €1500 (year one), €1000 (year two), €1000 (year three),
€2000 (year four).
This covers film, video, photographic materials and production-related expenses, specialist equipment, event attendance, books/publications, etc. Additional costs may also be incurred in the production of final year graduation films.
