‘Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity – and are able to turn both to their advantage.’ Niccolo Machiavelli

What makes this programme so good?

This dynamic and student-centred programme will help you to acquire the knowledge, competencies and skills to make things happen in the world of business. Graduates are equipped for ultimate success either as an entrepreneur or as a professional decision-maker in the business world. The teaching team, with extensive business experience in Europe, North America and Asia, has worked together for many years in the development of this programme.

If you want to be a participant, rather than an observer, this degree is for you. Our teaching approach is centred on how best to help each student to acquire entrepreneurial knowledge and competencies. The challenges encountered by entrepreneurs tend to be multi-faceted. We cultivate the competencies and skills, of dealing with such challenges, through a number of major projects.

These projects include running a business and selling in Dun Laoghaire People’s Park (year 1), running a business and selling through eBay (year 2), and business plans and magazine publication (year 3).

We invest significant resources in these projects as they provide numerous benefits; our students are encouraged to link knowledge acquired in different subjects, they get a chance to repeat exercises after reflecting on previous attempts and group and communication skills can be developed to a very high level. Small class sizes facilitate this highly personal approach to third level education.

What will I be able to do when I graduate?

‘You are the only warden over your mind. You hold the keys that can free your mind to see all of the opportunities out there.’ Dave Hertner

  • You will have a sound foundation on which to build an entrepreneurial career
  • You will have the knowledge and learning competencies to pursue careers, in both the public and private sectors, in marketing, finance and management
  • You will also be eligible to progress to DL243 Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Entrepreneurship (Level 8 Award), a 1-year add-on programme.

Assessment

‘No matter how dramatic the end result, the good-to-great transformations never happened in one fell swoop.’ Jim Collins

Most of the assessment (c. 80%) relates to continuous assessment, e.g. the major projects referred to earlier. The balance of the assessment is on end-of-year exams. The teaching team places a particular emphasis on giving timely feedback to students so that learning can be enhanced.

What are the Entry Requirements?

Leaving Certificate Examination (or equivalent) with a minimum of grade D in five subjects which must include Mathematics and English. Foundation level Maths (D3) is acceptable.

Any FETAC level 5 and level 6 Award may be used for application to this programme.

We welcome applications from mature students, who must apply to the CAO.

Making Cents – Magazine Project

23 students ran their own magazine enterprise as a multi-subject project in year 3. The aim of the ‘Make €ents” magazine is to help young people deal with financial issues. The students undertook all aspects of the enterprise from the initial idea to writing articles, advertising, design, printing, launch, promotion and finally to distribution. Under real-life conditions, the students launched the magazine, distributed 7,500 copies and obtained national press and media coverage.
