Ransomware research in IADT funded by UK EPSRC
Ransomware is an increasingly problematic and prevalent type of cybercrime, targeting both individuals and organisations. In this type of crime the victim finds that their data or files are being held to ransom by a cybercriminal individual or organisation.
In order to regain access to their data the victim must follow specific instructions for the payment of a ransom, usually involving a virtual currency. If this payment is not made within a certain time the data may be destroyed, or made available to the public or news media.
The funding application was submitted under the EPSRC ‘Human Dimensions of Cyber Security’ call, and was led by the University of Leeds, the University of Kent, Durham University and City University London. The research will commence in April 2017.
