Steve O’Reilly

Steve O’Reilly graduated from the MA in Broadcast Production for Radio + Television in 2016, he is now a Television Director, Director of Photography and educator who is based in Dublin working for Irish and international clients.

Steve's passion is for documentaries but any time working behind a camera on a good project is a privilege. His portfolio includes television commercials, brand promos, documentaries and other factual programmes.

We asked Steve about his time at IADT and his experience as a mature student.

What made you choose to study the MA in Broadcast Production for Radio + Television at IADT?

I had been working with Canon Ireland teaching single camera documentary workshops with an emphasis on the latest technologies for industry professionals.

I signed up for the MA Broadcast Production course because it offered a good opportunity at the right time. I really enjoyed the creative atmosphere in IADT when I came to visit the campus. You can get jaded after years in work so being with other students in a creative place can really energise new ideas.

What was the experience like studying as a mature student?

Joining the MA Broadcast Production course as a mature student allowed me to bring my experience and enjoy new skills. It was really refreshing to experience sectors of the industry that I hadn’t done before, so for me as a television industry professional radio production was really fascinating. I was surprised that the academic side was so enjoyable. I liked it because it gave me the time to analyse the industry and it was rewarding to put together scholarly academic writing that I hadn’t needed to do in my professional practice.

Working with students in project teams was an opportunity to share my skills and also to achieve good productions together. Sometimes I needed to sit back but most times I could really engage in class activities. Being back at a ground level among a student peer group was really insightful.

What have you gone on to do since graduating?

Since the course ended I have continued in my freelance work in broadcasting in Ireland and internationally but I’ve developed my part time lecturing in Higher Education as a direct result of my qualification, which I am really happy with. Overall this course allowed me to take a fresh look at my own practice.

The MA allowed me to be confident that I want to move into work in teaching alongside my freelance camera and television broadcast work. Overall I was so pleased and proud to have my broadcasting experience and learning accredited and this MA in Broadcast Production with IADT gave me the opportunity to move on to the next chapter in my life.
