David Smith graduated from Dunlaoghaire College of Art and Design in with Honours in Visual Communications. In 1998 he completed his MA at L’Atelier National de Recherche Typographique. The ANRT is a postgraduate facility specialising in typographic design and design research under the aegis of the FrenchMinistry of Culture.
He established Atelier David Smith, an independent design studio,
in 2000 and continues to combine project work in the public and
cultural sector with his teaching commitments.
He is one of a select group of current Irish based practitioners that have an international profile; to date his work has been published/exhibited
in Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, Japan, Slovakia, UK, The Netherlands, China and USA. In 2003 at Graphic Europe (Barcelona), David was selected as one of the foremost emerging designers whose work represents an important and original contribution to current graphic design practice. He has lectured publicly on his own practice and on wider issues concerning graphic design and has contributed to Eye
– the International Review of Graphic Design. International recognition includes awards and commendations from the Type Directors Club New York, Association Typographique Internationale (AtypI) and the International Society of Typographic Designers. His work for the Asko Schönberg Ensembles (designed and developed at UNA [Amsterdam]) received the Nederlands Huisstijl Prize and a Premier award for typography from the ISTD.
National awards include numerous commendations from the Institute
of Designers in Ireland (IDI); and a number of bronze, silver and gold awards from ICAD. In 2005 and again in 2007 he was awarded the prestigious EYE award for Visual Communications from the Institute
of Designers in Ireland.
A former Council member of the Institute of Designers in Ireland he remains active in design advocacy, education and development through membership of the International Society of Typographic Designers, ICAD and IDI. In June 2007 he initiated the three x 3 internship programme for graduates of Irish design schools.
