Aer Lingus graphic design and the rhetoric of ‘Nation-building’; the material and visual culture of aviation and tourism; Sean Lemass and intersection of design and Irish industry; the origins of Irish graphic design practice; the poster as cultural text; design and the display of national identity; the emergence of U.S. industrial design practice; Modernism, modernity, modernisation and design; the synthesis of design history, theory and practice.
Previously employed as a graphic designer (Dublin and New York), an arts consultant (Allied Irish Bank) and as a researcher and assistant curator (Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institute, New York, for exhibition: Henry Dreyfuss, Directing Design). Convened and co-organised On The Edge – Design and Material Culture In and Of Ireland, an international, inter-disciplinary conference at IADT, 2003; co-organised (with Critical Voices/Arts Council) Mein Kampf, a public lecture by Art Spiegelman at Liberty Hall, Dublin, 2003. Currently preparing conference on Sean Lemass and Irish design.
