What is Audio Visual Media Technology?

Audio visual media technology comprises the technology required for the production of film, television programmes, animation, commercials, corporate video and other multimedia products.

How long is the programme? 3 years

What will I be doing on the Audio Visual Programme?

This is an engineering degree, specialising in electronic systems for audio-visual technology. We aim to provide students with the technical and computing knowledge, skills, and competencies to enable them to gain employment in the audio-visual industry as electronics engineering technicians and technical managers.

Students will learn how to build, test and maintain electronic circuits and systems together with developing competencies in the use of audio-visual studio software applications. It is envisaged that students will specialise in different aspects of the programme according to their interests. Some students will specialise in electronics, while others will concentrate more on audio-visual systems. All subjects are taught from first principles and the level that students are expected to attain should be well within reach of all students. The final year of the programme gives students the opportunity to showcase their large-scale projects, with an eye to business and entrepreneurial ambitions.

On successful completion of the programme, you will:

  • have an understanding of the electronic components and systems underpinning audio visual media technology
  • be able to test and diagnose faults in electronic components and systems for a range of audio visual media systems
  • be able to identify and apply solutions for operational faults in a range of audio visual media systems

Aims and Objectives

What will I be able to do when I graduate?
There is a continued need for audio-visual based electronics graduates. Recent AVMT graduates have gained employment in a range of sectors including the electronics, broadcasting and installation industries.
The programme has been accredited by Engineers Ireland to Engineering Technician level which enables graduates to practice at this level in many countries both in the EU and elsewhere.
Level 8 opportunities for AVMT graduate are under review by IADT staff. Graduates may also qualify to continue their studies at other institutions of higher education in the Republic of Ireland and the UK.
IADT offers Masters level qualifications in Digital Media and TV/Radio Broadcasting which may with appropriate post graduate experience be of interest to some of the graduates from AVMT.
