About BA in Design in Modelmaking for Film and Media
This programme is designed to provide a broad education in specialised 3D studies and to encourage your development of artistic awareness, and equip you with creative and technical knowledge required for a successful career in the entertainment, media, cultural and allied industries.
Aims and Objectives
Through lectures and project work, you will achieve the required standard, acquire the relevant experience and assemble a portfolio of work to approach employers in the business. The programme is 80% practical and 20% academic.
What will I be able to do when I graduate?
You will be capable of working in a variety of different Modelmaking areas such as TV/Video and film industry, theatre, museums, interpretative centres and architectural and design practices.
This programme can also lead to further areas of study within the Institute such as the BA (Hons) in Production Design or to year 4 of the BA (Hons) in Animation. In order to qualify, you will need an overall pass mark of 40% (GPA 2.00) on this Model Making programme plus portfolio submission.
What subjects will I study?
Indicative subjects on the programme will include the following:
Architectural model making skills, figure drawing and modelling in clay and plasticine, mechanical and engineering studies, computer modelling and special effects, and academic studies that cover areas such as the history of film, special effects and theatre
What are the Entry Requirements?
- Leaving Certificate Examination (or an equivalent educational qualification) with a minimum grade D in 5 subjects to include English
- Any FETAC (NCVA Level II) Award may be used for application to this programme
- A portfolio showing a representation of both two and three dimensional skills
- You may be called for interview if further clarification on your portfolio is required
What should my Portfolio include?
- Drawings - observational and life to include different media – three dimensional sketch work. Drawing and observation skills are equally as important as 3D construction skills. You should demonstrate a creative imagination and an ability to develop concepts in two and three dimensions (3D work should be submitted in documented format)
- Colour work-painting, collage etc
- Project work dealing with concept and ideas
- Photographs of 3D model work (to include different materials)
- Photographic work (optional) or support work of personal interest
- Creative sketch books/notebooks or diary indicating interest in discipline
Are there any costs for materials and/or field trips?
The cost of essential materials is approximately €155 in year one and €350 in year two. The average cost of the final (Third Year) project to the student is approximately €800 - €1200. In the case of a digital project this can be cheaper however it is recommended that such students buy their own hard drives (€120 - €250). In addition, there is normally an educational trip to a foreign country. This varies from year to year but the student can expect to pay approximately €300 - €500. This trip is not compulsory.
Note: This programme is currently under review and plans are at an advanced stage to introduce a BA (Hons), Level 8 programme, in Model Making and Design for Film and Media in 2008.
