The New IADT National Film School Building Announced

The New IADT National Film School Building Announced by Minister O'Keeffe

15-02-2010

IADT welcomes the announcement by the Minister for Education & Science, Batt O'Keeffe TD, that the Government will fund the new National Film School Building at IADT’s Kill Avenue Campus. The new building, which will contain two HD television studios (the first in Ireland) one of which has blue-screen capabilities, two radio studios along with classrooms, offices and ancillary spaces, will be the most up to date facility for education in film and television production in Ireland.

In announcing the new National Film School building Minister O’Keeffe said that the “existing National Film School has produced a consistently high level of achievement for its student films nationally and internationally” and that the new National Film School building will be built to the highest professional industry standards, which will give the NFS the necessary tools to "produce the next generation of Irish film-makers of domestic and international renown.”

Welcoming the news, the President of IADT, Jim Devine, said, "It is particularly appropriate that the Government has generously recognised the hard work and many successes of the National Film School in this, the 25th anniversary, of film education in Dún Laoghaire. We are also pleased that the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival will screen a retrospective of our student graduation films in the IFI on Friday, 19th February. Also, this year, our graduates have received no less than 17 nominations for the 7th Irish Film and Television Academy Awards, which will be presented in the Burlington Hotel."

The new building will cater for 385 students in the Institute’s BA (Honours) in Film and Television along with students from a number of Masters Degree Programmes.  The new building will also facilitate the students from all of our programmes in the area of broadcasting and media. The HD studio will be used for single camera film shoots as well as multi-camera television work.

It is hoped that construction will begin on site in early summer with a projected opening in 2011.

The Design Team includes ABK Architects, Whyte Young Green Consulting Engineers, Michael Punch and Partners Consulting Engineers and Healy Kelly Turner Townsend Quantity Surveyors.
