Conference: Catholicism and Public Culture in Ireland, France, the UK and North America. June 17-19, IADT, Dun Laoghaire

16-06-2009

The event is co-sponsored by the Centre for Public Culture Studies, IADT, the Kucera Center for Catholic Thought at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, USA and the National Centre for Franco-Irish Studies at ITT Tallaght.

This interdisciplinary conference will investigate the Catholic Church as institution and as text in the context of the countries mentioned above, but with a particular reference to Ireland. It will focus on the impact of Catholicism, both actual and potential, upon other cultural fields, rather than on the confessional or doctrinal dimensions of Catholicism. About 50 papers will be delivered over the three days.

The keynotes speakers are:

  • James Donnelly, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Wisconsin;
  • Dr. Daryl Jones, Department of English, Trinity College Dublin;
  • Martin McLoone, Professor of Media Studies, University of Ulster;
  • Patsy McGarry, religious Affairs Correspondent, The Irish Times;
  • Mary Reichardt, Professor of Catholic Studies and Literature at the University of St. Thomas.
