Two Applied Psychology students are in the presenting at the CHI 2009 Student Design Competition in Boston

IADT Applied Psychology Students compete at CHI 2009 Student Design Competition in Boston April 4-9.
The annual CHI conference is the leading international forum for the exchange of ideas and information about human-computer interaction (HCI). CHI 2009 will be held in Boston, MA, USA. Many of the pioneering computer companies had their home in the Boston area. It is also the home of some of the great computing research universities.
Students were asked to design an object, interface, system, or service intended to support the idea of utilising or consuming local resources rather than global resources, in a sustainable and environmentally efficient manner.
These submissions were reviewed and 12 teams were invited to compete at the CHI 2009 conference. One group from the third year of the Applied Psychology programme in IADT was shortlisted to present their submissions to other conference attendees. Weigh Your Waste: A Sustainable Way to Reduce Waste, by Paulina Piasek and Alex Gartland was submitted and accepted.
The paper describes an interactive waste disposal device. The Weigh Your Waste device focuses on aiding the user with recycling and reducing waste. The system will consist of a digital weighing scales embedded inside a wheelie bin and a stand-alone touch screen inside the home. The weight of the waste inside the bin will be transferred to the screen using Wi-Fi technology.
Paulina and Alex will be attending and presenting at the CHI conference April 4-9 in Boston. Andrew Power, Head of School of Creative Technologies, Marion Palmer, Head of Department of Learning Sciences and Dr. Mark Riordan, Head of Department of Technology and all in IADT wish the students and their lecturer Robert Griffin all the best for the competition.
