Latest: RTE presenters Dan Hegarty & Damien Farrelly launch the last ever certificate level broadcast from Radio IADT
On May 16th, the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT), Dun Laoghaire launched its very own student run radio station; Radio IADT. The station will broadcast on 97.3 FM for a period of two weeks, from May 21st until June 1st. The broadcast will feature content generated solely by students from the Higher Certificate in Arts in Radio Broadcasting.
On the day of the launch, the students invited members of both the Radio industry and Print media to the campus for a meet and greet. The event was fully organised and coordinated by the same group of students, and featured music from Luan Parle and singer songwriter Roesy.
Station Manager John Walsh and future studio supervisor for Flirt FM had this to say “The launch is the culmination of two years hard work. What we would like to do now is raise the station’s profile in order to prove both our professionalism and proficiency in the field of radio broadcasting. We intend that Radio IADT will serve as our gateway into professional broadcasting careers”.
This year signals the end of the Higher Certificate in Radio Broadcasting, as the institute is developing a postgraduate radio programme. To mark the occasion, the current students tracked down and invited past radio students to celebrate the various successes the course has had over the past twelve years.
Notable past graduates of the course include Dan Hegarty (2FM), Kevin Brew (RTE1), Damien Farrelly (2FM) and Siobhan Madigan (RTE Radio 1 & 2FM).
The course has been run by Roger Greene (Newstalk 106), and featured lecturers who are prominent figures in Irish media, including Brendan Balfe (RTE1), Kevin Rafter (Sunday Tribune) and Eoghan Harris (Sunday Independent). Exposure to such talent means that the current batch of students have been thoroughly prepared for a career in modern broadcasting.
Radio IADT will serve broadly as a local radio station offering a wide variety of content ranging from drama, travel and music to hard news, current affairs and lifestyle. In addition, Radio IADT will be adhering to established formats, with the daily schedule featuring “The Late, Late Breakfast Show” from 9.07 to 11.00 and “Drivetime with Grange Audi” from 16.30 to 18.30. Programme Controller, Ciaran Casey believes that the “wide array of interests within the group, will serve as a platform from which to connect with listeners in the target audience of 16 to 35 year olds”.
