Fishing for Change, a new anthology of writing by IADT students of Creative Writing
08-12-2008
Fishing for Change: A new anthology of writing by IADT students of Creative Writing, is a stunning display of talent.
Edited by poet and Creative Writing lecturer Katie Donovan, the book contains work by sixty-nine writers.
The adventurous range of style and tone contained illustrates how much has been achieved, over the past four years, by IADT students who are tackling the genres of fiction, poetry, drama, feature-writing and memoir. Both in the fourth year EMCS Creative Writing elective and in the Thursday evening extra-curricular workshop, students have been coming together to produce a huge volume of work. Some of these students have gone on to pursue MA programmes in Creative Writing and Journalism, both in Ireland and the UK. Others are already putting their work into book form.
It is appropriate that so many new writers are emerging in the borough of Dun Laoghaire, as the area has many literary associations. Beckett and Joyce both lived here, and several well-known contemporary writers now make the area their home, including Seamus Heaney, Anne Enright, Joseph O'Connor and Maeve Binchy.
IADT hosts visiting writers who come to give readings and talk to students about the business of writing. Next up is the acclaimed Scots novelist, James Kelman, in February, who will be introduced by IADT's writer-in-residence, the novelist Sean O'Reilly.
