Level four comprises a self-initiated programme, shaped, directed and managed by the individual student through agreed negotiation with the course lecturing team. The culmination of this is the student’s final project and exhibition.

During level four, students critically investigate and explore content and concepts across all media in four interdisciplinary design projects. Three of the studio projects are completed in Term 1 and may incorporate the following areas or themes:
– local, national, or international student design competitions
– professional practice
– self-promotion
These projects are supported by a series of lectures and workshops to enable students to develop an in-depth understanding of the contemporary professional practice of design.

Final Project and Exhibition
In Term 2, the final project is based on a subject of the student’s personal choice. The project is also interdisciplinary and should incorporate one of the core subjects [typographics/ e-graphics / spatial design] as a major area of study, with a minimum of one other core subject as a substantial supporting area of study. The final project is self-directed, initiated by the student with the help and support of course tutors and external experts where necessary.

The final project presents students with an opportunity to fully engage with, and explore an area of particular personal interest, to draw upon the range of skills and languages learnt during the whole course, and to develop a major area of research for the remainder of level four.

At the end of the project, students present a body of work for final assessment and their graduate exhibition.

Degree Dissertation
The study of Design History and Theory, and Visual Culture is completed with the presentation of a Degree Dissertation at level four. The degree dissertation also provides a self-directed opportunity for students to research, investigate and analyse a subject of their own choosing. It is desirable but not a requirement that the research gathered for the dissertation may inform the student’s studio work.
